Washington DC Bids to Host Gay Games XI in 2022
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 30, 2016 – Gay Games Washington DC 2022 (GGDC2022) has officially submitted a bid to host Gay Games XI from July 16-23, 2022.
“Few events have the prestige or international focus of the Gay Games and GGDC2022 is proud to submit this Bid on behalf of the 34 LGBT sports teams of the Washington DC region and, indeed, our whole community” said Brent Minor, Chair of the Bid Committee. “We know that Washington has the experience, passion and international appeal that make us an excellent choice.” Minor added “We are delighted to announce three outstanding individuals as Honorary Chairs of the Washington DC Bid, including:
Sports legend Billie Jean King
Former Attorney General Eric Holder
Former Commissioner of the NFL Paul Tagliabue
We are also pleased to have the full support of the DC City Council, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Mayor Muriel Bowser who has pledged $2 million to support the event should Washington DC be selected.” In her letter of support of the Bid, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said, “When so many things in the world divide us, events like the Gay Games bring us together and give us the opportunity to celebrate our differences while recognizing our many similarities.”
It is expected that eight other cities will submit Bids including Austin (TX), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Salt Lake City, Denver, Hong Kong, and Guadalajara, Mexico. Washington DC bid previously for Gay Games IX and placed second.
The Gay Games is held every four years to celebrate the LGBT community through sports and culture. The next Gay Games will be held in Paris, France in 2018. It is anticipated that Gay Games XI would draw 12,000-15,000 competitors and upwards of 80,000-100,000 spectators to the metropolitan Washington region with an economic impact greater than $100 million.
“Knowing that we have such a great leadership team including the Mayor, a true sports legend and LGBT icon in Billie Jean King, along with 34 local LGBT sports teams and cultural organizations like the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, the Different Drummers Band and the Reel Affirmations Film Festival really gives us all confidence that we have a great chance to move to the final round.” said Minor.
Three finalists will be named on March 1, 2017 by the Federation of Gay Games and will be invited to make full presentations at the FGG Annual Meeting later that fall when a final vote will be taken and the Host will be announced.
